Juventus 3-1 PSV Eindhoven Young Boys 0-3 Aston Villa Milan 1-3 Liverpool Bayern 9-2 Dinamo Zagreb REAL MADRID 3-1 Stuttgart Sporting 2-0 Lille
Bayern break records by scoring nine times at the ground where they hope to be playing the final next May. Harry Kane scored four of them, three from the penalty spot. Hansi Flick and Barcelona will remember the last time Bayern smashed at least eight goals in very different ways.
Aston Villa won convincingly away from home, while Juve and Sporting also started strongly at home. Liverpool came from behind to win at San Siro, and Real Madrid suffered but managed to claim all three points.
FULL TIME: REAL MADRID 3-1 STUTTGART
Endrick even has a similar celebration…
STAT:
With his outrageously audacious goal, refusing the options to pass to the bigger names either side of him, Endrick became Real Madrid’s youngest ever scorer in the Champions League, beating Raúl’s record.
Enrique Ortega on Radioestadio:
“Real Madrid won like a champion, but they did not play like a champion”.
Luka Modrić assisting centre-backs from a corner in the Champions League. It’s football heritage…
In fact, it’s the first time that has happened since the 2014 final in Lisbon.
The Champions were made to work hard by an impressive Stuttgart side, but they did what they always seem to do in this competition, and found a way to win.
Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring on his competition debut for the club, before Denis Undav stunned the Bernabéu from a corner. Luka Modrić then had a corner which he expertly guided onto the head of Antonio Rüdiger.
Endrick got the crowd on their feet late on with a goal on his Champions League debut to add extra gloss to a scoreline which was far from certain for much of the match.
GOOOOOOOL DEL MADRID
Modrić makes his mark! He sets up Antonio Rüdiger to restore the host’s lead!
Carlo Ancelotti makes a double change as Fran García and Arda Güler come on for Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo. Can Madrid find a winner?
GOOOL Stuttgart
The Germans are level! The former-Brighton forward finally breaks the defences of the Belgian goalkeeper.
Luka Modrić has entered the fray. Los Blancos have just over 20 minutes to try and find a winner.
That was Kylian Mbappé’s 49th goal in the European Cup, which equals a certain Real Madrid legend.
Alfredo Di Stefano also scored 49 in the competition, and was a five-time champion with the club.
GOOOOOL Real Madrid
The hosts don’t score first half goals, but they score plenty in the second. An instant attack from the hosts sees Rodrygo find Kylian Mbappé who scores on his Champions League debut for the club just 21 seconds into the second half.
HT Real Madrid 0-0 Stuttgart
We reach the break at the Bernabéu and once again it is goalless. The only goal Los Blancos have scored in the first 45 minutes of games this season came at Son Moix on the opening weekend of LaLiga.
This picture rather sums up that opening period.
The penalty was originally called for a trip by Maximilian Mittelstädt, but on review the contact was limited. There does appear to be more in the shirt pull from captain Atakan Karazor.
Real Madrid thought they had a penalty on Rüdiger, but VAR overturned the decision.
Real Madrid are already having to suffer in the early exchanges. Stuttgart are not looking like a team who haven’t eaten at the top table since 2010.
After 20 minutes, the visitors have enjoyed 70% of the possession and have generated four shots on target. They are unlucky not to be ahead. Thibaut Courtois is standing tall once more.
Are slow starts already a them for Los Blancos this season? They have failed to score in the first half in six of their seven matches so far this season.
Unai Emery has now led six different club in Europe’s greatest competition. The only coach who has taken charge of more…Carlo Ancelotti of course.
Already some Spanish success to celebrate this evening. Unai Emery’s Aston Villa have won convincingly in Switzerland, beating Young Boys 3-0 in Bern. They are temporarily top of the table.
It’s fair to say that Real Madrid have quite a good record against German sides…
They have only lost one of their last 21 matches against German sides.
Girona are in the city of love ahead of their debut tomorrow night. Their South American stars have marked the occasion with a Champions League themed mate.
Here is the Stuttgart XI to face Real Madrid:
They were a revelation in the Bundesliga last season, finishing second, ahead of Bayern Munich, under the tutelage of young coach Sebastian Hoeneß.
Amidst the glitz and glamour of the Champions League returning, there is also LaLiga action this week. Curiously, as Flashscore point out, from Monday to Friday there are matches from four Matchdays being played.
Yesterday, Rayo came from behind to beat Osasuna to conclude Matchday 5. Tonight, Mallorca host Real Sociedad from Matchday 7. This and Thursday’s clash at Butarque between Leganés and Athletic Club have been brought forward due to the two Basque sides’ commitment in the Europe League next midweek.
In between those, Betis face Getafe in the delayed match from the third round of fixtures, originally postponed due to the involvement of Betis in the Conference League play-off.
Lastly, Matchday 6 kicks off on Friday with Sevilla heading to Mendizorroza to face Alavés.
Mess? Organised chaos? Fun quirk? You decide.
The Madrid press were enthusing about the prospect of seeing the attacking trident start on the big stage for the first time. It will be Kylian Mbappé’s first Champions League appearance in the white of Real Madrid.
Marca insist on the trend of naming a trident with the initials of the players, even if the acronym means little to anyone. Diario AS simply states "‘The Champion returns’.
With just under two hours to go until kick off, Carlo Ancelotti has named his starting XI.
The big news is Jude Bellingham and Aurélien Tchouaméni return to the lineup. The Englishman has not played since the opening game of the season at Mallorca. There is only one orthodox centre-back in the lineup, as the injuries affect Los Blancos too.
Following Dani Olmo’s worse than expected injury lay-off yesterday, Barça were hit with more bad news as Fermín López will be sidelined for three weeks.
You can read more on the concerns at Can Barça here:
Probably not the headline you expected shortly after F.C. Barcelona’s solid performance against Girona. With 15 out of 15 possible points in LaLiga, 17 goals scored, and a forceful showing week in, week out, Barça’s ship is sailing smoothly… except for one issue: the damned injuries.
Real Madrid are the only LaLiga side in action tonight, but there are other Spanish angles for us to follow. They take on Stuttgart at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Girona begin life in the big time on a grand stage: the French capital, no less, to take on Luis Enrique’s PSG. That is something to savour for tomorrow.
Atleti and Barcelona will have to wait until Thursday to get their campaigns underway, taking on Leipzig and Monaco respectively.
It’s opening night for the new format, with many UEFA chiefs hoping the radical change is a successful one. What do you think of the changes?

Hello and welcome to our coverage of the first Matchday of the 2024/25 Champions League.
It will be interesting to see how Real Madrid play tonight. Dani Carvajal having to play at centre-back. A very offensive front four. Probably a lot of work for Valverde and Tchouaméni to get through. Valverde has played every single minute of the season so far.
Stuttgart tearing Real Madrid apart at times, especially down the Lucas Vazquez-Dani Carvajal flank. Fede Valverde dropping in very deep there to offer some more cover, but that's leaving big gaps on the other side when Jude Bellingham breaks forward.
Real Madrid are obvious favourites tonight and it’s a boost that Bellingham and Tchouaméni are back. But I do think Stuttgart will cause them one or two problems, especially with the dangerous Deniz Undav up front.
