Three conclusions from Saturday's games
Another day in LaLiga means more surprises and exciting matches in a season that is getting harder and harder to predict as the weeks go by. Both the relegation and European battles remain wide open.
The Saturday of matchday 24 wasn’t an exception with Atleti thrashing Sevilla, Elche stunning Mallorca, Villarreal reviving their European hopes and Getafe pulling away from relegation.
So here go three conclusions that stood out:
1. Gerard-Moreno-dependance
He’s the difference maker for Villarreal, even if he’s not on the pitch for long. After just over 5 minutes since being subbed on, he made sure to break the deadlock against Almería and give his team another 3 crucial points in their fight for those desired European positions.
If you’re not convinced about his importance, just look at the yellow submarine’s numbers this season with and without him.
In LaLiga Villarreal have 9 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats with 21 goals scored and 9 conceded, when Moreno has been available. Whereas those number drastically change without him: 2 wins, 2 draws and 6 defeats, with 7 goals scored and 14 conceded.
The data speaks for itself. Villarreal need Moreno to succeed.
2. Atleti back where they belong
Diego Pablo Simeone couldn’t have dreamed of a better outcome in his 613th match as Atleti’s coach. Not only did he surpass Luis Aragonés, but he also became the manager to coach more games in a single club in Spanish football.
Atleti’s overwhelming 6-1 victory allowed them to return to the top 3 in the standings, since las being there there in early November. Their good run combined with Real Sociedad’s poor form, has given them the opportunity climb back up to where they belong.
It was also a masterclass from Antoine Griezmann, who not only scored a wonder goal and gave a pinpoint assist, but also set the tempo in Atleti’s attack and proved once again how important he is for the team. Things are looking up for los rojiblancos if we add Memphis Depay’s brace to the mix, who could help forget João Félix if he keeps up this level of confidence.
3. Getafe exit the relegation zone
Quique Sánchez Flores can breathe easy for now, given the 3-2 win over Girona will ensure he stays at Getafe for at least another week. The team’s first 45 minutes were a good example of what they’re capable of when focused.
This result also means ‘los azulones’ will remain outside of the relegation zone once this matchday is over, even if Valladolid and Valencia win on Sunday. Thanks to Almería losing and Sevilla taking a big hit on their goal average, Getafe has benefited largely and can sleep easy for now.
