The WSL continues to be a tantalising project compared to Liga F
Whilst Aitana Bonmati extended her contract at Barca this summer, other Spanish players chose to seek a new challenge in England.
Earlier this year Aitana Bonmati told French newspaper L’Equipe that Spain’s historic first Women’s World Cup win was “for nothing” as there have been no improvements for women’s football in Spain internationally and more importantly, domestically.
She cited the example of the transformative effect England winning the European Championship in 2022 had on women’s football in the country.
Sustained investment in the league followed England’s win which has brought more quality, with the WSL now able to attract some of the best players in the world.
That was exhibited when Chelsea broke the world record transfer fee in the women’s game to acquire Levante’s Mayra Ramirez.
Mariona Caldentey who left Barca this summer for Arsenal told the BBC in September that '“nothing has changed” since the World Cup highlighting that Bonmati’s point still persists and is only likely to lead to further departures from Spain to England.
