LaLiga relegation: What results does each team need?
On Sunday 4th June LaLiga’s 2022/2023 season will come to an end, revealing which is the third relegated team together with Elche and Espanyol.
Cádiz on 41 points, Getafe on 41, Valencia on 41, Almería on 40, Celta de Vigo on 40 and Valladolid on 39, are the six clubs involved in this life-or-death battle.
All the teams mentioned above depend on themselves to remain in LaLiga because if they win, they avoid relegation. But there are many other outcomes, so let’s take a look at which results each club needs to avoid relegation:
Cádiz
Cádiz plays away against Elche. A tricky game given Elche, despite being the worst team this season, is now unbeaten in the last four games.
If Cádiz…
Win: They avoid relegation no matter what happens in the other matches.
Draw: They avoid relegation.
Lose: They avoid relegation unless Celta wins, Almería wins, Valencia draws or wins and Valladolid beats Getafe. This is because Getafe has a better goal average, given they are drawn on H2H results.
Getafe
Getafe is set to play against Valladolid away at the José Zorrilla. A direct duel between two sides fighting to avoid relegation.
If Getafe…
Win: They avoid relegation.
Draw: They avoid relegation
Lose: They avoid relegation if Almería and Celta de Vigo also lose.
Valencia
Valencia will face Real Betis away, who are already qualified for the Europa League and can’t be moved from their 6th spot.
If Valencia…
Win: They avoid relegation.
Draw: They avoid relegation
Lose: They avoid relegation unless Almería wins or draws vs Espanyol, Celta de Vigo wins, Valladolid wins and Cádiz loses to Elche. This is because in case of a triple or quadruple draw on 41 points with Valencia, Getafe, Cádiz (and Almería), what’s taken into account are the points the involved teams have won against each other, rather than the H2H or goal average. So in the case of a quadruple draw in the standings, Valencia only got 4 points in their matches against Getafe, Cádiz and Almería. Whereas Getafe won 5 points, Cádiz 10 points and Almería 12 points.
Almería
Almería travel to Espanyol’s stadium in a match they’d be expected to win in normal circumstances, given the home side is already relegated. The only problem is that Almería are by far the worst away team in LaLiga with only one win and four draws.
If Almería…
Win: They avoid relegation.
Draw: They avoid relegation
Lose: They avoid relegation unless Celta de Vigo and Valladolid both win or draw their games.
Celta de Vigo
Celta play at home against a Barça squad that hasn’t been too reliable since winning the league title. Although Celta have been even less reliable, dropping from 10th to 17th in the last nine matches.
If Celta…
Win: They avoid relegation.
Draw: They avoid relegation if Valladolid draw or lose.
Lose: They avoid relegation if Valladolid draw or lose.
Valladolid
Valladolid are seemingly in the worst position to be in at the moment, 18th on 39 points. The good thing is they face Getafe at home, who are just 2 points away, meaning a win will keep them up for another season.
If Valladolid…
Win: They avoid relegation.
Draw: They get relegated unless Almería loses.
Lose: They get relegated.
