Four teams who could win the Liga F title
Liga F returned a week later than anticipated, after a a delayed start due to players striking after failing to agree a new minimum wage.
It is fair to say the new Liga F it is set to be on of the most entertaining and competitive campaigns to date, and we’ve picked out four teams who could challenge for the league title.
Barcelona
We kick-off the list with the current champions and the best team in Europe, Barcelona.
They are out to claim their fifth title in a row and their ninth overall this term after winning the title by 10 points last season.
Given that Alexis Putellas was missing for the majority of last campaign with an ACL injury and that she has now returned to full fitness, Barcelona’s potency in the final third has just gone up a notch again.
With Salma Paralluelo fresh from a breakout World Cup tournament where Aitana Bonmati was named Player of the Tournament, it seems difficult to fathom how anyone could stop this juggernaut from continuing it’s domestic dominance.
Real Madrid
A team desperate to catch their rivals and record a historic first league win, Los Blancos have been steadily building since their foundation in 2020.
After adding Man City’s Hayley Russo and Lyon’s Signe Brunn to a team that already has the likes of Olga Carmona, Linda Caiceido and Caroline Weir, whisper it quietly but, it seems they have a squad capable of pushing Barcelona.
They have closed the gap season after season on Barcelona, recording their highest ever points tally last term and lifting silverware in any capacity will surely be their aim this campaign.
Atlético Madrid
Like the other three contenders in this list, Atleti began their season with a win, a comfortable 3-0 victory against Athletic Club on Saturday.
Atleti come into the season with a spring in their step after last campaign’s cup success and some smart summer recruitment.
They held their nerve in May to defeat rivals Real Madrid 3-2 on penalties in the Copa de la Reina to win the competition for the second time in their history and the first time since 2016.
Having brought in the likes of Ana-Maria Crnogorčević from Barcelona, Vilde Boe Risa from Manchester United and Shelia Gomez from Villarreal they will be aiming to win their first league title since 2019 having acquired a good blend of youth and experience.
Before Barcelona’s dominance Atleti were the best team in Spain, winning three league titles in a row between 2016-2019.
They will be looking to build on their cup win last year and push the three aforementioned teams in this list much harder than they did last term, after they finished a distant fourth in the table.
Levante
Levante have been a side who have consistently finished in the top half of the table without ever making a serious assault on the title.
They recorded a third place finish last term, as they did in 2018-2021. The emergence of Real Madrid’s women’s team in 2020 did rob them of some of their best talents such as Ivana Andres and Marta Corredera, but they have still remained strong.
Their star striker Alba Redondo just won the World Cup with Spain and received a nomination for the Ballon D’or. She won the Pichichi Trophy last season after netting 27 goals and will be key for Levante to continue to challenge this season.
They are the outsiders, but at least closing the gap and having a good go in the cup competitions will go down as a successful season for the Valencia based outfit.
