This week has been a busy one in the world of football; not only have there been two weeks’ worth of domestic matches crammed into one, but there has also been a significant development in Florentino Pérez and Joan Laporta’s pursuit of the European Super League.
The European Court of Justice ruled on Thursday that both UEFA and FIFA have been "abusing a dominant position" in their control of European football by threatening to sanction clubs that want to join the Super League, which Europe’s top court labeled as “unlawful.”
The Super League project was initially introduced to the public in April 2021, when twelve of Europe’s most recognisable clubs announced their commitment to the proposed Champions League replacement, but proceedings were halted within days due to widespread backlash from fans, leagues, and governing bodies.
